Omega introduced its first all ceramic watch, the Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon (DSOTM), at BaselWorld 2013. It took the world by surprise and was something of a runaway success. Now, at BaselWorld 2015, the brand has launched four new ceramic watches under the Dark Side of the Moon umbrella.
Whereas the original Dark Side of the Moon was inspired by the adventures and accomplishments of the Apollo 8 astronauts (the first crew to see the dark side of the moon), the new watches are said to have been inspired by the ever changing nightlight. Four new timepieces have been created, the Black Black, Sedna Black, Pitch Black and Vintage Black.
Like the first ceramic Speedmaster, the new models feature monobloc ceramic cases, and are powered by the in-house, automatic Omega Co-Axial calibre 9300. All four watches offer time, date and chronograph complications, and have a two-register dial layout. Sapphire crystal protects both the dial and movement.
Black Black (ref. 3220.127.116.11.01.005)
The Black Black is the most extreme model in the new collection, and is the polar opposite of the just launched Speedmaster White Side of the Moon (read our story here). We are quite interested to see how this piece presents in person but we’ve already nicknamed it the ‘Darth Vader’ watch.
The timepiece has a polished and brushed black ceramic case, a matt black ceramic dial, and a black ceramic clasp on a black coated nylon fabric strap. The watch’s name is inspired by its brushed/blackened hands, and blackened applied indexes – all of these dial elements are coated with black Super-LumiNova. The sub-dials at three and nine o’clock are also matt black, and the black ceramic bezel has a black lacquered tachymeter scale.
Sedna Black (ref. 318.104.22.168.06.001)
When we saw this piece, we had flashbacks of the Speedmaster Apollo 11 45th Anniversary moonwatch. Like that watch, the Sedna Black is given a bit of a gold treatment, and the result looks quite good. If you loved the look of the Apollo 11 45th Anniversary piece but missed out, this could be an interesting alternative.
This watch has a brushed black ceramic case with a 18K Sedna-gold bezel ring, which matches the Sedna-gold applied indexes and hands. Vintage style Super-LumiNova coats the central hour, minute and gold-plated chronograph seconds hands, as well as the indexes, and the two dots at the 12 o’clock position. It is presented on a black leather strap with a brushed ceramic foldover clasp.
Pitch Black (ref. 322.214.171.124.01.004)
Just as the slightly older Grey Side of the Moon won us over with its abundant yet tastefully applied lume, the Pitch Black peeked our interest. We reckon it is easily the second most attractive piece in the new collection.
The Pitch Black ships with Super-LumiNova on the indexes on its matt black ceramic dial, and is offered with sub-dials that have varnished hands. It has a polished and brushed casebody, and a brushed ceramic bezel with a tachymeter scale also in Super-LumiNova. This model is presented on a black leather strap with nude stitching and a ceramic foldover clasp.
Vintage Black (ref. 3126.96.36.199.01.006)
Based purely on the pictures we received, the Vintage Black is our favourite ceramic Speedy in this new collection. We love the brown indexes and hands, and the matching vintage Super-LumiNova. Even the brushed ceramic bezel has a vintage Super-LumiNova tachymeter scale, and there’s a blackened central hands, as well as varnished brown hands on its two sub-dials. Rounding off the vintage look is a brown leather strap.
There’s nothing we can see that we’d want to change on this Speedmaster. We’re super eager to see this in person to make a final decision but we’re quite confident that this is the one we’d have.
