Pre-Basel: Tag Heuer announces 43mm Carrera Heuer-01

Tag Heuer announced its original 45mm Carrera Heuer-01 sports chronograph at Baselworld 2015, it was the first watch the brand released under the watchful eye of Jean-Claude Biver (our story here). Two years on Tag Heuer has announced a new Carrera Heuer-01, this time with a smaller 43mm case.

We reckon Tag Heuer has widened the Heuer-01’s appeal with this new case size.

Seven new 43mm models have been announced to date: blue dial and steel bracelet, blue dial and blue leather strap, brown dial and steel bracelet, brown dial and brown leather strap, black dial and steel bracelet, black dial and black rubber strap, and a black full ceramic reference.

This is a reasonably large launch line-up, and we reckon additional references will be introduced at a later stage (for reference, there are now more than a dozen 45mm Heuer-01 models to choose from). We’re pleased that Tag Heuer has seen fit to offer a smaller Heuer-01, as the previous models were just a little large for our wrists (we’re sure we’re not alone here).

Ref. CAR201T.FC6404 is our favorite of the new line-up.

That said, the 45mm Heuer-01 has been very successful for the brand worldwide (it’s one of their best selling models), so there’s obviously a market for large sport chronograph watches. Part of the reason the Heuer-01 is successful is because you get a lot of watch for your money, and Tag Heuer seems to have followed the same formula for these new watches.

The 45mm Heuer-01 featured a 12-part modular case, which allowed the brand to introduce new references with relative ease, while maintaining solid economies of scale. The 43mm Heuer-01 packs the same 12-part case design, and is also equipped with the same movement as its larger brother, the calibre Heuer-01 (named after the brand’s founder Edouard Heuer).

The Heuer-01’s skeleton dial is quite attractive.

The calibre is manufactured by Tag Heuer, though it is based on Seiko’s tried and tested calibre 6S37 chronograph movement. The movement offers time, running seconds, date and chronograph complications, and with regards to the chronographs, the calibre is thoroughly modern – it is equipped with a column wheel and a vertical clutch system. The automatic movement also offers 50-hours of power reserve.

The starting price for the 43mm Carrera Heuer-01 watches will be about US $5,000, the same as the 45mm Heuer-01. Watches are expected to hit retailers across the Middle East in summer 2017.
