Last year English football club Manchester United appointed Tag Heuer as its official timekeeper, so it comes as no surprise that the brand has now announced two new watches. Both are chronographs, and both feature the Premier League club’s logo on their dials and casebacks.
The Carrera Heuer-01 Calibre Manufacture Chronograph Manchester United Special Edition is the flagship timepiece, and is based on Tag Heuer’s hugely popular Heuer-01 Chronograph (our story here). As a result it features the same 12-part 45mm case, and is powered by the Calibre Heuer 01 self-winding movement.
Tag Heuer is offering two references of this watch – both feature black ceramic bezels and black PVD-coated steel cases. Where they differ is with regards to the straps, ref. CAR2A1J.FC6416 is offered with a red alligator leather strap, while ref. CAR2A1J.FC6400 features a black alligator leather strap. Both references are limited to 1,000-pieces, and if you consider Manchester United’s vast global fan base (over 600-million supporters), it’s reasonable to assume that some of those supporters are mechanical watch collectors, and so will grab the Carrera Heuer-01.
The second timepiece, known as the Formula 1 Chronograph Manchester United Special Edition, is based on the brand’s entry-level Formula 1 timepiece. Only a single reference is being offered (ref. CAZ101J.FT8027), featuring a 43mm black PVD-coated stainless steel case, and a black and red rubber strap with a pin-buckle.
This watch features a Ronda 504D quartz chronograph movement, and this watch is a special but not limited edition. The latter makes perfect sense given the club’s massive worldwide fan-base.
Regional retail prices for both Manchester United timepieces have yet to be announced, however we expect the Calibre Heuer-01 to be in the US $5,500 price range. As for the Formula 1, we expect that to be in the $1,800 price range.
