Watch-Spotting: We spotted a Speedmaster in ‘The Nice Guys’

‘The Nice Guys’ is a 2016 comedy/thriller that arrived and departed our shores in the Middle East with little fanfare. That’s a bit of a shame because it was a genuinely entertaining film starring Russell Crowe, Ryan Gosling and several other well known actors. The movie is set in Los Angeles in the 70s, and we spotted a couple of cool watches, one of which was an Omega Speedmaster.

Watch-spotting: Phil Coulson’s watch on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. isn’t what you think it is…

With three seasons already under its belt, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is proving a popular TV show. It stars Clark Gregg as Phil Coulson, a senior S.H.I.E.L.D. agent whose team is tasked with dealing with all sorts of interesting scenarios in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We’re now two seasons in, and we’d have gotten a lot further if we didn’t get sidetracked by our own mission to identify Coulson’s watch.

Watch-Spotting: The Rolex watches of Goldfinger

We’ve been dodging the heat and humidity of UAE summer this year by grabbing our favorite spot on the sofa, and watching all manner of TV shows and movies. Most recently we fed our trusty Blu-ray player a copy of 1964’s Goldfinger – one of our favorite James Bond films. The enhanced resolution and colors gave us full sight of two very cool Rolex watches – the Rolex Submariner 6538 and Rolex GMT Master 6542.

Exploring the history of the House of Bovet with Pascal Raffy

The history of the House of Bovet is as interesting as the timepieces that the manufacture creates. The independent brand owes its present success and prominence to Mr. Pascal Raffy, the current owner and CEO. Horology Middle East had the good fortune of meeting Mr. Raffy on his recent visit to Dubai to discuss Bovet, and examine some truly spectacular horological art.

Hands-On: MB&F’s Legacy Machine 1 M.A.D. Dubai

2011 was a big year for MB&F. The independent brand opened its first M.A.D. Gallery (Geneva), and launched the Legacy Machine 1, which introduced the world to the new (at the time) Legacy Machine collection. Since that time MB&F has introduced several Legacy Machines, but today the brand is revisiting the LM1 with a limited edition model, which will be sold exclusively through the recently opened M.A.D. Gallery in Dubai. It’s called the Legacy Machine 1 M.A.D. Dubai, and it has one of the most beautiful watch dials we’ve ever seen.

Two of a kind: Two new Seikos that we love

Seiko produces some fantastic watches but in the past, the brand released most of its highly desirable pieces only in its home market of Japan. Things are changing however, and this year the brand had several interesting quartz and mechanical watches at BaselWorld. We were drawn to two mechanical watches in particular, the Presage Automatic Watch 60th Anniversary (below), and the Grand Seiko Spring Drive 8 Day Power Reserve.
